If you’re thinking about finishing school, you probably have questions first. That’s normal — and it’s smart. Most adults who call Dream Academy aren’t ready to sign up on the spot. They just want straight answers about how this works.
Here are the questions we hear most often about earning an adult high school diploma in Virginia, answered in plain language.
Do I have to start over from the beginning?
No. This is the answer that surprises people most.
The courses you already passed still count. You don’t repeat four years of high school, and you don’t redo work you finished years ago. You complete only the courses you’re still missing, then you graduate.
Can my old high school credits transfer?
Yes. Previously earned credits can transfer after a transcript evaluation shows which courses you already completed.
That evaluation is the starting point for everything. It turns a guess — “I think I was close” — into a real list: these credits you have, and these are the ones you still need.
What subjects will I need to take?
Core subjects are English, math, science, and social studies. Elective courses can also count toward your total graduation credits.
Which ones you personally need depends on your transcript. Two students can start on the same day and have completely different course lists, because they left school at different points. That’s why a one-size-fits-all answer doesn’t work — your plan is built from your own record.
What’s the difference between credit recovery and a regular course?
Credit recovery lets you retake a specific class you previously failed, without repeating an entire school year.
A regular course is new material you haven’t taken yet, which you need to meet your diploma requirements.
Many adults need a mix of both: a few recovered credits, a few new courses, and a lot of old credits that transfer in and shorten the road.
How long does it take to finish?
It depends on two things: how many credits you still need, and how steadily you work through your courses.
Because the program is self-paced and online, there’s no fixed semester holding you back. Students who keep a steady routine — even in short sessions around work — tend to finish sooner than they expected. The honest answer for your situation comes from your credit evaluation, not from a general timeline.
Can I do this while working and caring for a family?
Yes — that’s exactly who this program is built for.
Coursework is online and self-paced, so you study on your own schedule: before a shift, after dinner, or on a weekend morning. There’s no classroom to drive to and no class time that conflicts with your job.
You don’t need large blocks of free time. You need a routine you can actually keep, and the flexibility to pick it back up on busy weeks.
Is this a GED program?
No. Dream Academy is not a test-prep program, and you don’t earn a GED here.
You complete real courses and earn a real high school diploma when you meet the graduation requirements. For many adults, that distinction matters — to employers, to colleges, and to themselves.
What if I left school years ago and can’t find my transcripts?
You are not stuck, and you don’t need to track everything down alone before you call.
Schools keep student records, and transcripts can usually be requested through the school you attended. If you’re not sure where to start, ask when you call. Finding out what credits you already have is a normal first step, even if you left a long time ago.
What does it cost?
Tuition is $850 total. You can start with a $200 deposit, then make payments as low as $50 a month.
No surprises and no need to pay it all up front. If cost is the thing holding you back, ask about the payment plan when you call so you can see the numbers clearly before you decide.
What if I’m nervous about going back?
Almost everyone is. Most of our students felt the same way before they started.
Here’s what usually helps: you aren’t walking into a classroom full of teenagers, and nobody is expecting you to remember everything from years ago. You work online, at your own pace, one course at a time — and each course you finish is one step closer to done.
